The Portfolio of Jeffrey Dennis Umphres

Addition to the Stockholm Public Library, 2008

The concept for this project was to create an environment wherein visitors might be encouraged to meander, explore, and discover while still allowing people to find texts quickly and efficiently as needed. To achieve this I separated the collection into seven separate libraries based on content and housed each individually within a greater envelope. By doing so I created a city of sorts linked by paths and plazas but protected from the elements year round.

    .

Sections, Concept site model, and Conceptual enclosure, Cascade raptor center, 2007

A recovery center for debilitated birds of prey and a unique classroom for the community. The site was a quiet clearing surrounded by evergreens a few miles outside the city. Thus my goal was to create a memorable learning experience by preserving the natural beauty of the site through delicate walkways and structures nestled gently into their surroundings.

    .

Conceptual Model and Watercolor, Running Pavilion, 2008

A destination, meeting, and way point for runners at the nexus of several paths. Designed to symbolize the struggle, sense of accomplishment and strong connection to the earth that make running a wonderful sport.

    .

Section, concept sketches and site model, Miami Art Museum, 2009

The Miami Art museum evolved from the idea that art is special and deserves to be held in something finer than a ubiquitous white box. I hoped to create an experience wherein museum goers could remove themselves from the chaos of their regular surroundings and enjoy the artwork on a modest and personal scale. However, there is a prescribed form for museums that is dictated by tradition and necessity; and in retrospect natural ventilation wasn’t the best choice for an art gallery.

    .

Elevation, Plan, and Model, Furniture Gallery, 2006

Community furniture workshop with a public courtyard, galleries and a separate studio apartment for a resident artist.

    .

    Conceptual Model, 2007

This was a model for a conceptual space station. It was an exercise in form derived from the extrusion of a two dimensional image.

    .

Construction Details, light wood frame house, 2009

    .

Rucksack, Concept sketch & completed pack, 2010

Without a constant flow of architectural problems to solve, I needed some semblance of a design problem. So, I began designing and constructing bags, hats and an occasional pair of pants. The process is really very fulfilling because it allows me to see my designs translated into something tangible rather quickly and it’s pretty fun too.

    .

    Luminaire, 2008

A conceptual light fixture used as a prop to study lighting patterns. Constructed from salvaged and repurposed materials.

    .

    Children’s book illustration, 2009

This was simply an opportunity to create something outside my typically prescribed design problems.

    .

    Self Portrait, 2009
